New BBC Christmas Trailer Featuring "Doctor Who"

A new BBC Christmas trailer aired this evening and featured clips from "The Snowmen":

"The Snowmen" - Official Synopsis

Following the release of the stunning images last night (which you can find here), the BBC have released the synopsis for "The Snowmen":
Christmas Eve 1892 and the falling snow is the stuff of fairy-tales. When the fairy-tale becomes a nightmare and a chilling menace threatens Earth, an unorthodox young governess, Clara, calls on the Doctor for help. But the Doctor is in mourning, reclusive and determined not to engage in the problems of the universe. As old friends return, will the Doctor really abandon humankind or will he fight to save the world – and Christmas – from the icy clutches of this mysterious menace.

"The Snowmen" - New Promos

Continuing the brilliant "movie posters" theme, the BBC have released a few more promos from "The Snowmen".  As per usual, right click and open in new tab/window for large versions:

Matt Smith to Appear on "The Graham Norton Show" at Christmas

According to the Radio Times, Matt Smith will join Dustin Hoffman, Billy Connolly and Jennifer Saunders on Graham Norton's sofa for the Christmas episode which is due to air on 21 December 2012 at 10.35pm on BBC1.

As usual with Graham Norton, it should be fun programme - made even better perhaps by having Jennifer Saunders, reportedly a bit of a Who fan herself, joining Matt on the sofa.

Colin is out of the Jungle...

Following his loss to Eric Bristow in a Bushtucker Trial "head to head", Colin Baker had to leave the "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here" jungle tonight.  In typical fashion, Colin seemed more concerned with finding the large stars which meant meals for camp rather than the small stars which were needed in order for him to stay in the jungle.

Colin revealed that he would like Eric Bristow to be crowned King of the Jungle despite his bond with chef, Rosemary Shrager.  Talking about Eric, Colin said "I adore him.  In the early days, when I was struggling a bit physically, he was the one that helped me".  As for Rosemary, he said "she's the type that rarely exists anymore.  Those old films of the 50's, no nonsense women who stride about the place.   She's completely random as well.  Although she's a brilliant cook it goes everywhere".

Colin's aim when entering the jungle was to lose weight - and he's certainly achieved that.  Just compare the picture above, taken just before he entered the jungle, to the one below, taken just as he left:

Colin achieved something else as well - he showed everyone else what "Doctor Who" fans have known all along: namely, that he's a lovely man and an utter gentleman.

You can watch Colin's exit interview at itv.com.  The youtube link will be posted when it becomes available.

BBC Shop Exclusive Season 7 T-Shirts

The BBC Shop have some terrific new Season 7 T-Shirts available for pre-order - one t-shirt for each story so far.  They're priced £17.99 and there is free UK delivery:

Asylum of the Daleks:

"Oswin's Souffle Cell" - I like the fact that this shirt has quotes from the episode on it such as "somewhere underground, I think" and "too beautiful to live".  It's a great shirt, only available in red and, as the BBC Shop proclaims, it is an "exclusive, limited edition".  As the BBC description reads:  "This design celebrates the first appearance of Oswin Oswald and her love of making soufflés, by creating a logo for her own soufflé themed eatery. Of course, the logo contains a few hints that perhaps Oswin is not all that she seems…."

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship:

Yes, it's Tricey!  Again, this shirt links beautifully to the episode: "After a rip-roaring adventure dodging dinosaurs, robots and a ruthless, galactic whealer-dealer it’s not surprising Brian needed a little holiday. Inspired by his desire to see the universe and that very helpful Triceratops ‘Tricey’ on board the Ark, this design imagines a fictional travel company run by Brian and The Doctor. Think of the sights you could see and the adventures you could have with those guys."

A Town Called Mercy:

Of the five, this one is my favourite - and yes, I might already have pre-ordered it.  I love these shirts because they're not overly obvious.  The description for this one is:  "While obviously related to the fantastic western themed episode, this design is actually inspired by the prequel short ‘The Making Of The Gunslinger’ where Kahler Jex’s Experimental Cyborg Program and the creation of Kahler-Tek is shown in action. Of course this highly dangerous program is protected by the Abaraxas security software that The Doctor manages to by-pass, despite its claim of ‘Incinerating Intruders For Three Centuries’"

The Power of Three:

Another really cool shirt - this one includes the UNIT logo: Every team needs its own dedicated uniform and this ‘Team Cube’ t-shirt is exactly that. The job of ‘Team Cube’ is to observe the mysterious cube at all time. The design had to adopt The Doctor’s slogan ‘In It Together’ and of course, Team Cube would have to be a division of U.N.I.T. so why not Kate Stewart’s ‘Scientific Research’ division?

The Angels Take Manhattan:

Lovely imagery again - and, of course, it had to have the Statue of Liberty, didn't it?  The description reads: So the Statue of Liberty is a Weeping Angel, who knew? Inspired by this iconic, incredibly scary image and the creepy Winter Quay apartments, this logo design imagines the the Angels ‘battery farm’ as a retirement home with it’s slogan “Your Time Is Our Time” Well, every human battery farm needs a front right?

Wonderful t-shirts - and these are currently available from the BBC Shop for pre-order.

Colin Baker - A hidden talent comes to light...

"I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here" has been somewhat overshadowed this year by the drama queen antics of Helen Flanagan but tonight there was an event of such awesomeness that it's been the #1 trend on Twitter since it happened.

What epic event was it?  Colin Baker and darts legend Eric Bristow were teamed up in the Camp Variety Show and had to...rap.  Yes.  They had to rap.  And they bought the house down.  If you're ready, then feast your eyes on the British answer to Eminem and Dr Dre:

In the diary room afterwards, Colin said "No, I wasn't having a heart attack.  I was trying to do what those gangsta fellows do..."  Obviously, they were judged the winners of tonights "event" and won tickets to go to the Jungle Pub where Colin got down on the dance floor with a Pussycat Doll.

Of course, this isn't the first time that Colin has "sang for his supper" so to speak.   Remember the Big Finish audio drama Doctor Who and The Pirates:

Maybe there's a new career ahead for Colin.

You can get the latest "I'm a Celebrity" news at: ITV I'm a Celebrity and there are a couple of twitter accounts set up to support Colin:

Matt and the Moff talk about the Christmas Special

The Official BBC Doctor Who Site have a brief article where Matt and the Moff give their thoughts about "The Snowmen":

Starring Matt Smith as the Doctor and introducing Jenna-Louise Coleman as Clara, his new companion, this year’s Christmas Special is called The Snowmen and follows their adventures as they battle the villainous Doctor Simeon (Richard E Grant) and his army of sinister snowmen.
It promises to be a movie-scale episode and aside from Clara’s debut and the return of Strax, Vastra and Jenny, The Snowmen introduces a new look for the Doctor and a new monster that will have families shivering behind their sofas.
Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, said, ‘The Doctor at Christmas is one of my favourite things - but this year it's different.  He's lost Amy and Rory to the Weeping Angels, and he's not in a good place: in fact, he's Scrooge.  He's withdrawn from the world and no longer cares what happens to it.  So when all of humanity hangs in the balance, can anyone persuade a tired and heartbroken Doctor that it's time to return to the good fight?  Enter Jenna-Louise Coleman…’
Matt Smith, who plays the Doctor, commented, ‘For this year’s Christmas Special we have the wonderfully villainous Richard E Grant as Doctor Simeon.  As well as lizards, Victorian assassins and deranged warriors from the future all return to convince the Doctor that he should board the TARDIS again and save the world.  Add to that Jenna-Louise Coleman and so begins the Christmas Special, 2012. I hope everyone enjoys it!’

Doctor Who - Children in Need - Approximate Timings

The Radio Times have announced tonight's BBC "Children in Need" lineup in full.  There are two timeslots of interest to us:

7:30pm - 8pm Children in Need Terry Wogan, Tess Daly, and Fearne Cotton present the marathon night of fun and fundraising, which begins with a performance by boy-band One Direction. Then there's the first of two Children in Need Doctor Who exclusives: a prequel to this year's Christmas Special written by Steven Moffat.

and

8:30pm - 9pm Next comes an exclusive trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas special, which will give viewers their first look at the Doctor and his new companion. Then Aled Jones faces the daunting task of uniting thousands of children all over the UK to sing live in a mass nationwide choir. Plus Pudsey Bear will be dancing with his namesake – Pudsey the Dog from Britain’s Got Talent.

We will also discover the title of the Christmas Special.  Obviously, this is a live show - the times are approximate but hopefully the Doctor Who items should be done by 9pm - so we can turn over and watch Colin Baker on "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here" on ITV...

It's Official - Colin Baker enters the jungle...

Following days of rumours, ITV finally made the list of celebrities taking part in "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here" official today.  As expected, Colin Baker is one of those entering the jungle to take part in the various bushtucker trials.  You can find details of all the celebrities taking part at I'm a Celebrity but Colin had this to say about it:

Date of Birth: 8th June 1943
Phobias: Heights, standing at the edge of a cliff rather than jumping out of planes. Not too fond of spiders either
Missing any special occasion: Half of the rehearsals for my role as Nanny Nelly in pantomime at Bournemouth.
Miss most: My family
Dream camper: Derren Brown. He can hypnotise me into thinking I am eating steak and chips rather than witchetty grubs!
Relationship status: Married

One of the most famous actors ever to play Dr Who, Colin Baker is looking forward to his stint in the jungle because he hopes to lose a stone and a half in weight.

Smiling, the 69-year-old star, who was the 6th incarnation of Dr Who between 1984 and 1986, admits he'd love to walk out of the camp thinner than when he entered. "I am a rather large gentleman and I adore my food," he says. "I could give up booze with a drop of a hat but food, my gosh there is not even a fridge I can raid in the middle of the night!

"But I am seeing this as an opportunity to lose weight. I am aiming for at least a stone and a half and it would be fabulous if I can. I just then hope I can keep it off once I am out!"

It's thanks to Colin's four daughters that he is doing I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!

"My children decided I should do this," he says, chuckling. "They are fans of the show and the programme is on incessantly every year. They told me I had to go on and they are so excited.

"They keep telling me that they can't wait to see me eat something disgusting. It's not something you would expect to hear from your children is it?!

"Now I am about to go in the jungle, I wouldn't say I am excited. It's a mixture of intrigue, a feeling of resigned and interested to see how I am going to react. I haven't a clue as I have not done anything like this ever before. For me, this is pushing back the boundaries."

And yet whilst he is happy to go in the jungle for his family, the actor admits he will miss them terribly. "It's the one thing I am going to find hard," he adds. "I don't think I will break down in the jungle but I am going to miss my wife and children a lot. I am the one that when things go wrong in the house, I deal with it. Even if I am out of the country I will sort it out. The fact that I am not going to be contactable is hard. I know I will worry."

As the oldest member, Colin hopes he will be able to bring some wisdom to the camp. "I want to be kind to the people who are having a tough time, " he explains.

"And I will be stern with people who are not pulling their weight. I am only worried about being one of the oldest contestants in the sense that I will worry about matching the energy of the younger ones."

Colin, who has enjoyed a distinguished acting career over several decades, starring in dozens of theatre shows including Privates on Parade and Run for Your Wife, says he would be chuffed if his stint on I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! did lead to more TV work.

He explains: "I am intrigued to find out what happens. It won't be weird going in as me rather than as a character because I still go to a lot of Dr Who conventions as myself. I still watch the show and I think the new Dr Who, Matt Smith, is brilliant.

"I don't think I would have done this if I was younger but at my time of life, I would be delighted if it did lead to more television."
Keen to stress he definitely does not have a game plan, Colin admits it would be the icing on the cake if viewers voted him as their King of the Jungle. "I would like to win it," he says. "I am a tad competitive and if I do anything, I always want to win. But I wouldn't want to ever give myself an advantage over others. I would want to win it fair and square. It would be lovely if viewers thought I was alright and a good camper."
The show starts on Sunday 11 November 2012 at 9pm - and ITV would miss a trick if they didn't have 06 as Colin's number...

The Cybermen Return in 2013

The Official BBC Doctor Who site have confirmed the recent rumours that the Cybermen will be returning in Season 7, Part 2.  They'll be returning in the Neil Gaiman episode so I think we can expect them to be more menacing and less easily defeated.  Guest stars confirmed to be appearing in the episode are Warwick Davis, Tamzin Outhwaite and Jason Watkins:
The Doctor will come face-to-face with some old enemies…We can confirm that the Cybermen will be menacing the universe once again when Doctor Who returns for a run of eight epic episodes in spring, 2013.The iconic enemies will feature in an adventure directed by Stephen Woolfenden and written by the acclaimed Neil Gaiman whose previous episode was the Hugo Award-winning, The Doctor’s Wife.
Starring Matt Smith as the Doctor and Jenna-Louise Coleman as the new companion, the episode co-stars Warwick Davis (Life’s Too Short and Harry Potter), Tamzin Outhwaite (EastEnders and Hotel Babylon) and Jason Watkins (Being Human and Lark Rise to Candleford) as a band of misfits on a mysterious planet…
Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, told us, ‘Cybermen were always the monsters that scared me the most! Not just because they were an awesome military force, but because sometimes they could be sleek and silver and right behind you without you even knowing. ’ He added, ‘And with one of the all-time classic monsters returning, and a script from one of our finest novelists, it's no surprise we have attracted such stellar names as Tamzin, Jason and Warwick.’
The Cybermen last appeared in 2011’s Closing Time but debuted in 1966 opposite William Hartnell’s Doctor in the classic The Tenth Planet. Over the years they have proven constant in their attempts to terrorise the Time Lord, invade our planet and destroy humanity… Secrecy surrounds all future adventures but we can’t wait to find out more about the Cybermen’s latest deadly gambit!

Hugh Bonneville - Doctor Who Items Charity Auction

Hugh Bonneville - better known to us Who fans as Captain Avery from "Curse of the Black Spot" - is auctioning off a selection of items from "Downton Abbey" and "Doctor Who" for charity.  The charity is The Singing Bird School Trust and there are currently two "Doctor Who" items on offer.

1. Curse of the Black Spot signed cast and crew tshirt plus signed photo

A definite collectors item here and Mr Bonneville will add a signed and dedicated photo too.  The description reads:

I know collectors of Doctor Who memorabilia are very serious about it so I will be VERY SERIOUS in my description, too.
This is an exclusive Cast & Crew T-shirt created by Griffrig Rigging for the episode 'Curse of the Black Spot' (note the skull & crossbones above the Doctor Who logo), in which I played Captain Avery. The shirt has never been worn, you'll be relieved to hear, and I have signed it with a silver marker. I suspect the signature wouldn't survive a wash, so this is for the genuine collector rather than for someone who desperately wants to walk round town in a Doctor Who t-shirt with a signature on it and 'Griffrig Rigging' on the back.
I will add a signed photograph of me as Captain Avery, dedicated as directed by the winner of the auction.
Proceeds are going to a local education project, The Singing Bird School Trust  -  Reg. Charity 1045051.
Thanks for bidding!
To bid, go to: Curse of the Black Spot signed cast and crew tshirt plus signed photo

2. Doctor Who CD and Signed Photo

A CD and signed photo - both signed by Barnaby Edwards:
Doctor Who item passed to me by The Audio Adventures of Doctor Who Writer and Doctor Who Dalek, Barnaby Edwards. Now let's face it, not many people can claim to be both.
This is a CD of an episode written and signed by Barnaby, The Emerald Tiger, starring Peter Davison. It's not in its wrapper due to being autographed but otherwise is in pristine condition.
Also, a signed 10 x 8 photo of Barnaby Edwards and 'his' Dalek.
I'm really grateful to Barnaby for his allowing the proceeds of this auction to be put towards an education project for which I've been raising funds, The Singing Bird School Trust  -  Reg. Charity 1045051.
To bid, go to: Doctor Who CD and Signed Photo

Bidding for both auctions ends on 11 November 2012.  Get bidding - some great items and a very worthy cause.

A Melody Malone Audiobook in Production?

Well, well, well.  We all wanted it - are we about to get it?  Neil Gardner, the producer of the "Doctor Who" audiobooks has posted a rather teasing little tweet this morning:

He then went on to admit that it should have been "spoilers, sweetie".  So, will Alex Kingston be narrating a Melody Malone mystery or a "Doctor Who" audiobook?  No matter - either way it seems we will be treated to the Kingston's dulcet tones... and if that's not ear porn then I don't know what is.

You can follow Neil Gardner on twitter: HokusBloke - after all, he may tweet more spoilers...

Last chance to bid on some Matt Smith signed charity items

Mark Jefferies, a journalist who works for the "Mirror", attended Matt Smith's first appearance at the "Doctor Who Experience".  He took the opportunity to get a couple of items signed and has put them on ebay to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity by way of sponsoring Tom Bryant who is running the London Marathon in aid of the charity.  If you can't bid on these two items then please consider a donation by going to Tom Bryant's Just Giving page.  Both items close today so you'll need to be quick:

Item 1 - Doctor Who SIGNED Matt Smith Action Figure CHARITY Auction TWO Autographs:

The description reads:
You are bidding on a SIGNED Doctor Who figure, signed TWICE by Matt Smith. This would make a great present for a Who fan.
I have met Matt a number of times through my job as a journalist and asked him to sign a couple of items for charity when he attended the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff on October 12. He initially signed the plastic and because I was worried it might come off I asked him to sign it again, so it is signed twice! Both are clean bold signatures.

The description reads:
You are bidding on a SIGNED Doctor Who postcard, signed by Matt Smith. This would make a great present for a Who fan.
I have met Matt a number of times through my job as a journalist and asked him to sign a couple of items for charity when he attended the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff on October 12. As well as the signed postcard there is also a rare Who laminate included that I got for attending the press day and the contents of a goody bag, with a fact sheet, magazine and a programme from the Experience in a Doctor Who bag.
Once again, these are both charity lots to raise money for a very good cause so if you can't bid then please consider a small donation by following the link below:
