Review - "Let's Kill Hitler"

Well, "Doctor Who" certainly burst back onto our screens with one hell of a bang last night. "Let's Kill Hitler" was a funny, heartwrenching and exhausting episode - we were given answers...and more questions. Various little details were tied up nicely, such as the question of why River didn't regenerate in "Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead".

The episode started in a cornfield - a little nod to last season's "Vincent and the Doctor" perhaps - with Amy and Rory creating a rather unique crop circle to attract the Doctor's attention. Pretty extreme but if he's not answering his phone then what can you do? Matt Smith was rocking his new coat - thankfully, no long explanation of where he got it - and we had a new character who livened things up: Amy and Rory's long time friend, Mels.

Another "Let's Kill Hitler" Promo Pic

Another promo from the BBC - they're certainly dribbling them out. I'm looking forward to the "Night Terrors" ones but this one is pretty cute.

Head over to the Official BBC Doctor Who Site for wallpaper sized versions of most of the promo pics.

"Let's Kill Hitler" - a few teasers...

Initially, I wasn't going to do this - but having received a few emails requesting "teasers" from "Let's Kill Hitler", I decided to just go for it. There aren't many - mainly because I think this episode needs to be seen as "unspoiled" as possible.

1. A banana. Ohh, that banana.

2. I see nearly naked people.

3. A bit "corny".

4. There's a blindfold...

5. When you start downloading, you never quite know what you're going to get.

6. Will someone ever come out of the closet?

Sorry but that's all you're getting. It was such fun watching it without knowing anything - so if you're offered spoilers...please say no. It really is so much better.

Interviews and Updates

Well, it was a busy day yesterday as the weekly TV Magazines were all published. Most, of course, had articles and features on "Let's Kill Hitler".

For those of you who are outside the UK, then Life, Doctor Who & Combom have full scans of the Radio Times, TV Times etc.

Digital Spy have a really good interview with Matt Smith - the interview contains "teasers" as opposed to "spoilers" and included this hopeful little snippet:

And you'll be in the TARDIS for the 50th Anniversary, is that right?
"I think so, as I'm led to believe. Especially now being involved and being a fan of Doctor Who - I'll be a lifelong fan of it - to be involved in a show... You look at the celebrations for Coronation Street - it was huge, wasn't it? And I think Doctor Who has a similar place and is an institution in similar ways and all the rest of it, and to be a part of it is just a real privilege."

Happy for Matt to still be there in 2013? Oh you bet!

There has also been another "Doctor Who Confidential" clip released. This time the cast and crew discuss "Let's Kill Hitler":

"Let's Kill Hitler" Spoiler-Free Review

This is not going to be easy. "Let's Kill Hitler" got an amazing reception at the BFI and, to be honest, it was not what I was expecting.

After the events of "A Good Man Goes to War", I was expecting something very dark. Literally, within minutes of the episode starting, there were laughs a plenty. The episode manages to balance the dark moments with some cracking one-liners and some absolutely epic funny scenes.

It starts in a cornfield - and the Doctor is reunited with Amy, Rory and their friend, Mels. Then it gets...wibbly. Hitler gets his comeuppance but there's too much involving the Doctor, Amy and Rory going on to pay much attention to it. There's actually an awful lot that happens - a lot for fans to digest - so I'm really looking forward to seeing it again.

The thing about this episode is that it's fun. Yes, there's darkness, questions, some answers, heart-break but it's all intermingled with a great deal of humour.

I loved it so much more than I expected. So - things to watch for: a banana, "tingles", a brilliantly constructed and well thought out "enemy", epic Rory humour and Alex Kingston and Matt Smith acting their socks off. In fact, I would say it's the best Alex and Matt episode yet. Yes, we get 11 in his new coat...and in top hat and tails. We also get an 11 who is ... desperate. That's all I can really say - but there are some intriguing "cameos" that'll make you either laugh or groan (!).

Sorry not to give you more but I really, really can't spoil things - you DO have to see it as unspoiled as possible.

Prequel to "Let's Kill Hitler"...

Here it is. Enjoy!

I will be posting a spoiler-free review of "Let's Kill Hitler" in the next couple of days together with a run down of the Q&A at the BFI.

Prequel to "Let's Kill Hitler" Available Monday

The BBC Doctor Who Website has released details of the prequel to "Let's Kill Hitler" which will be available to view on Monday:

The Prequel to Let's Kill Hitler will be released on Monday and available exclusively from this site.

But stand-by for something that's different to the previous Prequels! This one bridges episodes 7 and 8 and reveals a little about how the Doctor and Amy are feeling following the events of A Good Man Goes to War.

The Prequel is written by Steven Moffat and so as you'd expect, it has humour, drama and a heart-breaking moment... Matt Smith and Karen Gillan are on great form in the short video which you'll be able to watch on Monday.

So, if you can't wait for Let's Kill Hitler, come back to the site on Monday for the Prequel!

BFI Autumn Launch

On Monday 15 August 2011 at 6.20pm, the British Film Institute, Southbank, will screen "Let's Kill Hitler". This will be followed by a question and answer session with some "special guests". Guests are not being announced until nearer the time.

The event is fully booked - and, in fact, sold out within an hour of tickets being made available. However, it IS worth keeping an eye on the BFI website because return tickets could well be put up for resale:

I was lucky enough to get a couple of tickets so a spoiler-free review of "Let's Kill Hitler" will follow the screening.
